  • A freshwater survey throughout mainland New Caledonia (%22La Grande Terre%22) and a few caves on Lifou, the Loyalty Islands, yielded twenty one species of atyid shrimps which included four new species and two new records. Of the twenty one species ten are endemic, four are of Pacific distribution and seven are of Indo-Pacific distribution. About half the number of species recorded from New Caledonia tend to be widely distributed while the other half tend to have a restricted regional distribution. Diversity is higher on the wetter, windward northeast coast. High endemism in the southern part of New Caledonia suggests its early geologic isolation.
