| - Six new species belonging to the subgenus Xanthempis of the genus Empis are described from Europe and Middle Asia: E. (X.) assalemensis, sp. n., E. (X.) caceresensis, sp. n., E. (X.) hypandrialis, sp. n., E. (X.) moncayoensis, sp. n., E. (X.) montivaga, sp. n. and E. (X.) pseudosemicinerea, sp. n. A diagnose, including a drawing of the male hypopygium, is proposed for three other species: E. (X.) algecirasensis Strobl, E. (X.) kuntzei Becker and E. (X.) testiculata Bezzi, the male hypopygium is also figured for four additional species: E. (X.) aequalis Loew, E. (X.) laeta Loew, E. (X.) semicinerea Loew and E. (X.) styriaca Strobl. A lectotype is designated for E. (X.) algecirasensis Strobl, E. (X.) concolor Verral, E. (X.) digramma Meigen, E. (X.) kuntzei Becker, E. (X.) laetabilis Collin, E. (X.) lutea Meigen and E. (X.) punctata Meigen, the holotype of E. (X.) testiculata Meigen is identified, and a new synonymy is proposed for E. (X.) testacea. Finally a catalogue is given for all the species belonging to the subgenus Xanthempis.
