| - A new species of Chalybs HUBNER, (1819) (Lepidoptera, Lycaenidae, Theclinae, Eumaeini) has been confused in French Guiana with Chalybs janias (CRAMER, 1779). Chalybs mitaraka n. sp. is described from the interior of French Guiana (Saul, Itoupe, Mitaraka massif). It differs from C. janias by possessing only one pair of brush organs associated with the ventral male genitalia vinculum and by the absence of a dorsal projection of the vinculum. Mitochondria) COI DNA sequences have a 4.9% mean divergence between the two species. Chalybs mitaraka n. sp. is recorded from Suriname, Guyana and South-East Venezuela. An overview of Chalybs taxonomy is presented, including a generic diagnosis and the recognition of Chalybs cecina (HEwnsoN, 1868) as a distinct species. To stabilize the nomenclature, neotypes are designated for Papilio janias CRAMER, 1779 and Papilio hassan STOLL, 1790.
