  • The revision of populations of the genus Proformica in France, published in 2017, led to the redescription of Proformica nasuta (Nylander) and to the description of a new species: Proformica longipilosa Galkowski, Lebas, Wegnez, Lenoir&Blatrix. These two species have a relatively limited distribution area in Southern France. Proformica nasuta seems restricted to the lower Rhone valley, whereas Proformica longipilosa occupies the Southern foothills of the Alps. A third population of Proformica ants has been discovered in France, in highlands, in Cerdagne, in the PyreneesOrientales district. Morphological, genetic and cuticular hydrocarbons-related characteristics of this population, examined and compared to data from the other Proformica populations in France and in the Iberian Peninsula, show that this population belongs to an undescribed species, that we describe as Proformica cerdanyensis n. sp.
