| - Camelobaetidius matilei n. sp. was discovered in French Guiana. The last-instar larva is described. This species is remarkable by : its size, the smallest known in this genus (< 2.5 mm, without cerci) ; the reduced numbers of great submarginal setae of labrum (0 + 1), and of great marginal setae of femora (3 or 2 only) ; the total absence of hind wingpads. No thoracic osmobranchiae. Morphology of labium is characteristic of matilei, as are the legs, comparatively short and very strong, adapted to fast alternation of emersion-immersion of rocky substratum at the water level ; number of denticles of spatulate tarsal claws ranges between 13 and 15. During our extensive study of the genus Camelobaetidius in French Guiana since 1996, six species were identified, four of which new to science. Three species are especially interesting : C. matilei, billi and janae. Possible absence of hind wings in Camelobaetidius must be taken into account in the definition of this genus ; moreover this points out the lack of reliability of the (presence-absence) character (and/or size and structure) of hind wings at the genus level in Baetidae. C. billi Thomas & Dominique, 2001, intermediate between the definitions of Camelobaetidius Demoulin, 1966 and Dactylobaetis Traver & Edmunds, 1968, fully confirms the synonymy established by MCCAFFERTY & WALTZ (1990). C. janae Dominique & Thomas, 2001 has an extraordinary bifid maxillary palpus, probably osmoregulator, at least partially. A key to the species of Camelobaetidius of French Guiana and a distribution map are provided.
