| - The New Caledonian scincid lizard Caledoniscincus orestes was described from Mt Panie in the northeast ranges in 1986. Recent field research has extended the range of the species in this region to nearby Mt Colnett and Mt Ignambi, and south to several distant sites in the central ranges. Allozyme electrophoresis indicates subtle genetic and morphological differentiation between the broadly allopatric northern and southern populations. The species is restricted to mid to high elevation habitat throughout its range. It is likely to be continuously distributed in mid to high altitude closed forest habitat on the various peaks of the Panie range, and considered to not be under any immediate threat in this region. By contrast, populations in the central ranges are discontinuous and relictual nature, and are highly susceptible to threats associated with human activity in the area, most notably mining and frequent burning of adjacent woodland. The conservation status of the isolate populations in this region is rated as potentially endangered.
