  • A new streptocephalid species is described from La Reunion Island (French Over sea Department). Streptocephalus reunionensis n. sp. is distinguished from African and Madagascan congeners by the morphology of the male second antenna. The latter is characterized by finger with two small, similar teeth, an unarmed bow between the anterior and posterior parts of the thumb and by the acute form of the hand. The taxonomic relationship of S. reunionensis with species from Africa, Madagascar is discussed. Aspects of the ecology of S. reunionensis are described (associated fauna, vegetation and abiotic environmental conditions) and its survival is discussed in relation to predation by fishes recently introduced to limit culicid larvae (vector of malaria). These fishes may cause the rapid extinction of the new fairy shrimp suggesting it be considered an endangered species.
