  • Mesophyllum expansum (Philippi) comb. nov (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) and a clarification on the Mesophyllum species reported in the European seas. The lectotype of Lithophyllum expansum Philippi, previously recognized as a Mesophyllum and considered a heterotypic, synonym of Mesophyllum lichenoides, has been reinvestigated and compared to recent samples. On the basis of recently introduced new criteria, the taxon is elevated to the rank of species and named Mesophyllum expansum (Philippi) comb. nov. Five species of Mesophyllum are thus reported in European waters: M. expansum, M. lichenoides, M. alternans, M. macroblastum, M. macedonis. Their main diagnostic features are here recalled; this clarification should help to improve in the future the knowledge of bathymetric and geographic distribution of these species.
