Apatania zonella was discovered in France in the high mountains of Mercantour National Park (Alpes-Maritimes department) above 2000 m elevation. Only females were collected. The identification was confirmed by both the examination of genitalia of more than twenty individuals and the DNA analysis of four specimens. This population is genetically very similar to that found in northern Finland. A map of its distribution in Europe and in the world is provided. The unexpected localization of this species in Southeastern France could be explained by the persistence of rather cold periods in the last ten millenniums. Currently, the snow season in the region lasts approximately six months.
