| - Knowledge on the European freshwater Gastrotricha is still very scanty and quite heterogeneous. As concerns France. the research which has been carried out in the last thirty years has allowed the record of only 36 species in 10 genera and 3 families, all belonging to the order Chaetonotida. In this context, considering the poor current knowledge of the French gastrotrich fauna, a geographical large-scale study has been undertaken on this group. Twenty-six species of Chaetonotida were collected and identified. 14 of which are reported in France for the first time and two are undescribed species. Thank to the present data the number of the freshwater species of Gastrotricha known for France so far increased from 36 to 52. These results suggest the opportunity of carrying on this research pro-gram for improving the faunistical and biogeographical knowledge of Gastrotricha living in fresh waters of France.
