| - Seventeen European species of the genus Hilara Meigen (Diptera: Empididae), classified in the well-defined group %22Hilara quadrivittata%22 sensu Collin, are revised. All species are briefly diagnosed, 2 species are described as new for science and 5 are redescribed; full data on distribution and dates of the occurrence are given. Ten lectotypes are designated, and 3 holotypes identified. The common nominal species Hilara quadrivittata Meigen is shown as a complex of two distinctive common European species, but also as an unavailable name, being a younger synonym of Hilara fuscipes (Fabricius); therefore, two new species, Hilara quadrifasciata sp.n. and Hilara quadrula sp.n., are described, both widely distributed in Europe. Hilara carpathica Nmsiowwsm becomes a new synonym of H. tetragramma Loew. The hypothesised phylogenetic relationship of treated species is discussed and natural lineages are illustrated.
