  • Up to now about 88 species of the subgenus Diostracus LOEW s. str. have been described. Almost all of them are distributed in East Asia and North America. Hitherto only one European species was known, Diostracus (Diostracus) leucostomus (LOEW, 1861) from the Alps. This paper describes a new Diostracus s. str. species from the European continent, Diostracus (Diostracus) lemavajulorum spec. nov., found in the course of two sampling tours in 1992 and 1993 in the Corsican Alps. Differences between the European species of Diostracus LOEW s. str. and the Diostracus subgenus Sphyrotarsus MIK, and aspects of zoogeography, are discussed.
