  • This study is based on previous works from the authors (DEFAUT 2011 et 2015, NOGUERALES 2017, NOGUERALES&al. 2016, 2017, 2018a, 2018b), which are complemented here by an additional biometric study considering 46 primary parameters (compared to 43 in DEFAUT 2001) quantified in 151 [male] (62 [male] in DEFAUT 2011), and 42 primary parameters (36 in DEFAUT 2011) quantified in 168 [female] (73 [female] in DEFAUT 2011). Our study shows that Gomphocerippus binotatus and G. armoricanus are distinct species, whose divergence dates back the Gunz-Mindel interglacial period. Each of these two species each presents several subspecies, namely: G. binotatus binotatus in northern and center Iberia, G. binotatus ibericus nov. in southern and eastern Iberia, G. binotatus beticus nov. in Sierra Nevada above 2 000 m, G. armoricanus armoricanus in western, southwestern and center France, and G. armoricanus provincialis in southeastern France (and occasionally located in the Aragonese Pyrenees). Because of the inaccuracy of the type locality of G. binotatus (%22Portugal%22) and given that its two main subspecies are distributed in Portugal (the one in the North, the other in the South), we considered a neotype had to be designated, which will be held by the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC) in Madrid (Spain). The new type locality is located in Serra da Estrela (Beira Alta, Portugal; specific coordinated are provided in the text
