| - The DANIELE BENFAT TI collection of water mites (Hydrachnidia and Halacaridae) deposited and curated at the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Verona is the largest public collection of this group of freshwater invertebrates in Italy. It includes over 10.000 specimens collected by BENFATTI (1100 slide-mounted, the remaining in KOENIKE's fluid), representing 166 species out of 57 genera and 26 families. Due to the addition of 431 specimens, mostly ex coll. GERECKE, including 160 species, 84 of which not represented in coll. BENFATTI, the total species number amounts to 246. Geographical focus areas are the Italian Alps (regions of Trentino and Piemonte), the lowlands surrounding Mantova and Verona (Venezia tridentina), the Northern Apennines (Regions Emilia Romagna, Liguria and Toscana) and the French Island of Corsica. This paper includes: (1) a list of the material; (2) the discussion of remarkable taxonomic details, including descriptions of seven species new to science: Atractides giustinii, A. ruffoi and Aturus scapulatus (Corsica), Axonopsis danielei (Corsica and Liguria), Hygrobates psammocrenicus (peninsular Italy and Corsica), H. helocrenicus (peninsular Italy and Sicily) and Torrenticola tyrrhenica (Sicily, Corsica); (3) a discussion of zoogeographically interesting new records (17 species recorded for the first time from Italy, 14 from Corsica, regional faunal lists enriched by 48 species for Emilia Romagna, 18 for Liguria, 7 for Toscana, 5 for Veneto, and 2 for Lombardia).
