  • Hitherto two species of Pycnolejeunea have been reported from New Caledonia. We describe the new species P. apiculata Thouvenot & Gradst. The species resembles the rare Malesian P. cavistipula but differs in the frequently apiculate leaf apex, the very wide angle between keel and ventral leaf margin, the incurved lobule free margin and the somewhat longer than wide and more deeply bifid underleaves with acute-apiculate lobes. The new species is part of the little-known bryophyte flora of the remote rainforests surviving in the low, coastal mountain ranges of southern-most New Caledonia.
