dct:abstract
| - Parasitological examination of 36 free-ranging bison of both sexes, 2 months to 21 years of age, revealed 31 species of helminth parasites. In comparison with bison from a closed reserves the helminth fauna of free-ranging animals comprised 10 additional species, all characteristic parasites of Cervidae. Bison bonasus appeared to be a new host for 9 species: Parafasciolopsis fasciolaemorpha, Trichostrongylus capricola, Ostertagia leptospicularis, O. kolchida, Spiculopteragia mathevossiani, Cooperia pectinata, Nematodirus roscidus, N. europaeus and Nematodirella alcidis. Spiculopteragia boehmi (= S. spiculoptera), found once in a bison from the reserve, was common in free-ranging animals. Free-ranging bison were heavily infected with stomach-dwelling nematodes. Season of the year and host age also showed a bearing on the parasite fauna of the animals examined.
