| - The groundwater along the Couze (= river) Pavin in Auvergne, France, yielded 4 chydrid Cladocera, among which 2 are known but rare species [Alona rustica and Pleuroxus piger comb nov.], while 2 are new species [Alona phreatica and A. bessei ]. One of the new species, A. phreatica, has reduced eye and ocellus-sizes, but no other adaptation to a groundwater-mode of life are apparent. The likelihood that more phreatic species exist in other parts of Europe and elsewhere is discussed.
