dct:abstract
| - The genus Arotros SCHAUS, 1892 of medium-sized moths, recently transferred to Apatelodidae, is revised. Originally monotypic, the genus shows a higher diversity than anticipated, leading to the description of seven new species and one subspecies. The moths belonging to the genus are found throughout South America. Examination of various populations of Arotros has revealed numerous undescribed species, all similar in appearance, but with distinct male genitalia. We redescribe Arotros striata SCHAUS, 1892 and describe (in different author combinations, see text) an additional seven species and one subspecies from the Amazon, the Andes, Cerrado, Chaco and Atlantic forest: A. bidentata sp. n. (holotype (HT) male deposited in MNHN), A. colleti sp. n. (HT male in MNHN), A. giustii sp. n. (HT male in NHMUK), A. moseri sp. n. (HT male in DZUP), A. moseri Guarani ssp. n. (HT male in CDH), A. nozama sp. n. (HT male in IAVH), A. tridentata sp. n. (HT male in MNHN) and A. vincenti sp. n. (HT male in MNHN). The imagos and genitalia as well as the locality data on a map of all species are figured.
