  • Aphids (Prociphilus spp.) and their hymenopterous parasitoids (Aphidiidae) associated with the ash tree (F. excelsior L.) in various environments in Czechoslovakia are studied. Hitherto the parasitoid complex has been accepted as a single species, Ephedrus plagiator (Nees), a common parasitoid of key aphid pests on cereals. The possibly positive role of Fraxinus as a reservoir of parasitoids through their association with Prociphilus was presumed. Laboratory screening tests on various aphids as hosts of the target parasitoid revealed host range patterns different from those of the true E. plagiator (check). Subsequent biosystematic analysis resulted in the separation of a further species, E. prociphili sp. nov. is described and classified as a parasitoid of Prociphilus spp. on Fraxinus and possibly also of certain other species. The life cycles and seasonal histories of the aphids and parasitoid are compared. The parasitoid does not follow the heteroecious aphids that migrate to the roots of conifers (Abies) during the summer, and its subsequent life history remains unclear as diapausing stages have not been observed. F. excelsior is classified as an indifferent tree species in relation to the cereals (neighborhood). The only positive effect of the parasitoids associated with Fraxinus could be in reducing the aphid populations that migrate to the roots of firs and may cause even heavy injury (nurseries).
