dct:abstract
  • A distinctive erebine moth, Cyligramma latona (Cramer, 1775), is reported for the first time from one of the Mascarene islands, namely La Reunion. Cyligramma argillosa Guenee, 1852, which was previously reported from these islands (Mauritius at least), is shown to be a synonym of Cyligramma fluctuosa (Drury, 1773), a widely distributed afrotropical species. Due to a wrong delimitation of C. fluctuosa and C. limacina (Guerin-Meneville, (1832)) considered in an early 206 century work, the latter species has been erroneously reported from the Malagasy (sub-)region in recent years. In fact only six species of Cyligramma Boisduval, 1833, are currently known to occur in the western Indian Ocean (notably in Madagascar, where all of them are present). Along with a new interpretation of the wing pattern in Cyligramma, a key based on external imaginal characters is proposed for the identification of the six species in question.
