  • A first-year Lesser Whitethroat was caught in a mistnet on 25 October 2017 on Ouessant (Ushant) island, westernmost tip of France. Its wing formula, outer-tail pattern and overall coloration were indicative of an eastern subspecies. The bird accidentally lost a few vent feathers during handling which allowed a DNA analysis to be carried out by Urban Olsson. The results proved this bird to belong to the Siberian subspecies blythi, a form that had long been suspected to occur in France and even was on the French list althought without strong supporting evidence: this record is the first firm confirmation ofits occurrence. Incidentally, a second Lesser Whitethroat was caught at the same site the next day, also showing phenotypic characters suxestive of an eastern form; it however remains subspecifically unidentified due to the lack ofgenetic data.
