  • Alphitophagus xaxarsi (Reitter, 1914) (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae), a species considered endemic to the island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands), but reported once from Barcelona (Spain), is discovered in France, in two xeric pine forests of the Aude department. It is found associated with Alphitophagus obtusangulus J. Milner, 1904, showing clearly intermediary individuals (coloration patterns and morphological characters). The study of some 79 specimens of these two rare and very little-known species, including 11 type specimens, makes it possible to show that A. xaxarsi must be considered as a western darker colored form of A. obtusangulus. The autecology of both species is also identical, with regard to mycetophagous elements mainly growing in the Pine bracket fungus Fomitopsis pinicola on Pinus halepensis or Pinus pinaster. A guild of associated species is mentioned. A new synonymy is established: Alphitophagus obtusangulus J. Muller, 1904 = Alphitophagus xaxarsi (Reitter, 1914), syn. nov. Some 27 currently known localities of this species are presented on a map, still only restricted to 4 countries of Mediterranean Europe. Photos of both taxa, including some type specimens, as well as inhabited host fungi are presented.
