| - Phreatobiological studies carried out in the alluvial plain of the Rhone upstream of Lyon (France) have shown the presence of an important interstitial fauan near the piezometric level, in particular a new species of Microcharon (Crustacea, Isopoda): M. reginae. A description is given to point out the distinctive supposed apomorphic characters. M. reginae belongs to a group of the most derived freshwater species with a round smooth pleopod II in the female. Some ecological aspects are discussed; thanks to its abundance in the underflow of the Rhone as deep as -3 m in the sediment (more than 4500 individuals pump-sampled), and its frequency in the oldest and the remotest fluvial annexes (%22lones%22) of the main river, the species can be considered as an indicator for stable milieus. The overall distribution of the French continental species of the genus Microcharon is approached based on geological data: the speciation could be the result of a vicariant process related to regressions of the Tethys sea between Eocene and Pliocene.
