dct:abstract
  • Several samples of amphipods of genus Pseudoniphargus were obtained in groundwater habitats of some Mediterranean Is-lands. Three new species are identified: Ps. planasiae, sp. nov. collected in subterranean freshwater of the Pianosa Island (Tuscany Archipelago) and Ps. obritus, sp. nov. from Corsica, Ps. duplus, sp. nov. herein described, brings the total number of Pseudoniphargus species from Sicily to 4. The new species are closely related to each other and to Ps. adriaticus. They are discernable by many new apomorphies and are characterized by a high level of discrimination. On the basis of morphology and geographic distribution the adriaticus group is proposed for the eastern Mediterranean of Pseudoniphargus species. In addition some populations attributed to Ps. adriaticus are provisionally recognized as distinct species but not described because of lack of adequate material. Similarly P.s. adriaticus italicus Karaman & Rufus, 1989 is definitively raised at specific rank.
