dct:abstract
  • Description of Cherylia guyanensis n. gen., n. sp., a filarioid in which microfilariae occur in the skin and adults occur in the ventral subcutaneous and perimuscular tissues of Metachirops opossum in French Guiana. Description of the infective stages from experimentally infected Ixodes ricinus. This genus has all the essential characters of the Dipetalonema lineage with the exception that paired caudal languettes are absent in both the adult and infective stage. The mixture of archaic and specialized characters suggest that this Filarioid is a relict species. The filarial fauna of american marsupials is now composed by 4 species, all of the Dipetalonema lineage but they are heterogeneous: two species are paleoendemic (Skrjabinofilaria and Cherylia), two are neoendemic and separately introduced (Acanthocheilonema pricei and Cercopithifilaria didelphis).
