  • The forestal edaphic thecamoebian population in Asturias (Spain) and in several stations of southwestern France (Malepere Massif, Aude, and Gresigne Massif, Tam) is characterized by the presence of taxa not yet recorded elsewhere in Europe. For example, species such as Cyclopyxis lithostoma, Heleopera rectangularis and the genus Planhoogenraadia are frequently found in intertropical zones. The latter genus, represented in the region by three species (Planhoogenraadia asturica, Planhoogenraadia cantabrica, Planhoogenraadia gracilis), is notable for its calcicolous character. Forest elements with tropical affinities are present in the Planhoogenraadia stations (ferns Davallia canariensis, Hymenophyllum tunbrigense, Stenogramma pozoi = Dryopteris africana...). Other species can be found that are characteristic of the forest edaphofauna of North and Central America, Korea, Japan and Papua New Guinea: the genus Distomatopyxis represented in Asturias by Distomatopyxis couillardi. This genus could confirm the ancient contacts between Eurasia and America (like several other species of bryophytes and pteridophytes, as well as certain cavernicolous isopods: Cantabroniscus primitivus), or could represent a relict of an ancient peri-Mesogean population. Subaerial species are found that have not yet been observed elsewhere: Centropyxis pseudodeflandriana. This species belongs to an R-strategy group with worldwide distribution. Its localization can be explained by supposing that it is a recent %22species%22 or a calcicolous ecotype of Centropyxis deflandriana.
