The genus Rhyncogonus Sharp, 1885, is represented in French Polynesia by 63 species shared between the Austral, Marquesas and Society archipelagoes. A 64th species, Rhyncogonus butaudin. sp., collected on the island of Anaa in the Tuamotu Archipelago, is described and its geographical and taxonomical affinities are discussed. The species Psomeles luctuosus Guerin-Meneville, 1838, described from Tahiti, is different from Psomeles luctuosus (Boisduval, 1835) and here transferred to the genus Rhyncogonus, leading to the following new combination: Rhyncogonus luctuosus (Guerin-Meneville, 1838), n. comb.
