The cribrimorph bryozoan Puellina flabellifera (KIRKPATRICK 1888), from the Indian Ocean, is the flag-ship species of an unexpected complex of species and morphotypes sharing the same peculiar type of avicularium characterised by a truncate, flared rostrum and a mandible with a free distal part considerably broadened. Consideration anew diagnostic characters permits the description of four new species from the Atlanto-Mediterranean region (P. Atlantic n. sp., P. macaronensis n. sp., P. mikelae n. sp.) and the Pacific Ocean (P. vaceleti n. sp.) and five unnamed morphotypes ranging from the Caribbean to the southern Indian Ocean. The worldwide spread of this complex among tropical and warm-temperate regions allied with very diverse habitat preferences argues for a Tethyan origin and raises the question of the function of this particular avicularium. This distribution pattern also suggests that this species group is much more diverse than presently known considering the lack of information from fossil deposits and the extent of potential areas that have been poorly or not investigated.
