dct:abstract
A new subgenus of mites of the genus Tarsonemus CANESTRINI & FANZAGO, 1876 (family Tarsonemidae) is erected and described based on Tarsonemus ips LINDQUIST, 1969. Following species are new combinations under the new subgeneric name: Tarsonemus pyrrhidi SCHAARSCHMIDT, 1959, Tarsonemoides micrungulatus SCHAARSCHMIDT, 1959, Heterotarsonemus egregius LIVSHITZ, MITROFANOV & SHARONOV, 1982, Hemitarsonemus angolensis CARMONA, 1969, Tarsonemus naegelei SUSKI, 1967, T. ips LINDQUIST, 1969, T. kennedyi SMILEY & MOSER, 1974, (=T. pseudokennedyi OCHOA, 1991 n. syn.), T. spathulaphorus MAGOWSKI & KHAUSTOV, 1999 (incertae sedis), T. wilkinsoni SMILEY & MOSER, 1974, T. fraxini MAGOWSKI & KHAUSTOV, 2006, T. bistridentati MAGOWSKI & KHAUSTOV, 2006 and T. amygdali MAGOWSKI, DIDUSZKO & AHADIYAT, 2007. The type- and member-species are redescribed or rediagnosed, and illustrated. Descriptions of following new species are given: T. (S.) cochise, T. (S.) populi, T. (S.) acmocerae, T. (S.) balazyi and T (S.) mahunkai. A key for the determination of species is supplied. The systematic position, biology, ecology and phylogeny of the new subgeneric taxon are discussed. Species of the new subgenus are often associated with subcortical scolytid and cerambycid beetles, and geographically cover the temperate zone as well as some tropical regions.
