dct:abstract
Beetles from 271 recently used nests of tree sparrow (5317 incl., 54 spp.) and 64 nests of house sparrow (1925 ind., 26 spp.) collected in 1978-1998 in SW Slovakia were examined. The number of beetle species differed due to the different number of nests examined. In particular, the number of occasionally occurring species increased linearly with number of nests. A sample of 40 nests is sufficient to characterize the proportion of dominant and constant species. The beetle fauna in the tree and house sparrow nests is functionally similar. Individual throphic groups were represented as follows: necrophages 80% and 90%, respectively, detritophages 6.2 and 6.6%, carnivores 8.5% and 4.9% and mycetophages 4.1% and 0.7%, respectively. Carnivores occurred mainly in late spring and early summer, whereas necrophages and detritophages in late summer and autumn. The presence of mycetophages depended on weather conditions. A time separation of Gnathoncus buyssoni (occurring mainly in summer) and Gnathoncus cominunis (occurring mainly in late autumn) was observed.
