dct:abstract
The fauna of stream macroinvertebrates was sampled in May 1983 in several sites covering the main catchments of la Reunion Island. The collected material included four species of blackflies: Simulium ruficorne Macquart, 1838, the only one previously reported from la Reunion, and three new species (S. triplex n. sp., S. borbonense n. sp., S. indoceanicum n. sp.) related to the ruficorne-group. These new species are shown to be distinct from S. ruficorne (and from the known species of the ruficorne group on Madagascar). A complete description of S. ruficorne and of the above mentioned new species is provided. Pupae of S. borbonense and S. tolongoinae (endemic of Madagascar and related to the ruficorne -group) are quite similar: but the most distinctive characteristics of these species are those of the male genitalia. Two species (S. triplex, S. indoceanicum) are cool-adapted to headwaters; S. ruficorne and S. borbonense appear to be lowland stream eurythermic blackflies.
