<jats:p> <jats:italic>Circinotrichum</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Gyrothrix</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Vermiculariopsiella</jats:italic> represent a complex of dematiaceous, setose, saprobic hyphomycetes that are commonly collected on plant litters in tropical, subtropical to temperate climates. Multi-locus analysis (ITS, LSU, <jats:italic>rpb2</jats:italic>) and morphological studies revealed that <jats:italic>Gyrothrix</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Circinotrichum</jats:italic> are polyphyletic and species belong to 10 genera grouping in three different clades within <jats:italic>Xylariales</jats:italic>, named <jats:italic>Coniocessiaceae</jats:italic> (<jats:italic>Circinotrichum</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Pirozynskiomyces</jats:italic> gen. nov.), <jats:italic>Microdochiaceae</jats:italic> (<jats:italic>Selenodriella</jats:italic> and the resurrected genus <jats:italic>Peglionia</jats:italic>) and the new family <jats:italic>Gyrothricaceae</jats:italic> (<jats:italic>Gyrothrix</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Xenoanthostomella</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Neogyrothrix</jats:italic> gen. nov., <jats:italic>Pseudocircinotrichum</jats:italic> gen. nov., and <jats:italic>Pseudoceratocladium</jats:italic> gen. nov.). <jats:italic>Vermiculariopsiella</jats:italic> (<jats:italic>Vermiculariopsiellales</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Vermiculariopsiellaceae</jats:italic>) is emended for species with setose sporodochia with simple setae (<jats:italic>V. dichapetali</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>V. eucalypticola</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>V. immersa</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>V. pini</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>V. spiralis</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>V. australiensis</jats:italic> sp. nov.) while <jats:italic>Vermiculariopsis</jats:italic> is resurrected and includes setose fungi with branched setae (<jats:italic>Vs. dunni</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Vs. eucalypti</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Vs. eucalyptigena</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Vs. lauracearum</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Vs. microsperma</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Vs. pediculata</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Vs. castanedae</jats:italic> sp. nov.). </jats:p>
