The genus Nitela Latreille, 1809 in Europe is revised and six species are recognized. This study includes an identification key, diagnosis and descriptions of all species, illustrations of the most important features, geographic records, and a discussion of the relationships among species. Three are new: Nitela blascoi, sp. n., Nitela lucens, sp. n. and Nitela truncata, sp. n. A lectotype is designated for Nitela fallax Kohl, 1884.
