dct:abstract
The author's journeys to Guadeloupe, Lesser Antilles, in 1998, 2000 and 2002 are summarised from a coleopterist's point of view. The major habitats are described with their characteristic vegetation and note-worthy Coleoptera species: beach, mangrove, sugar cane region and different types of tropical forest as well as the highly specialised vegetation of the summit area of the volcano La Soufriere. Altogether 70 identified species of Coleoptera are mentioned, the following until now unknown from Guadeloupe: Ochthebius attritus (Hydraenidae), Hexacylloepus smithi (Elmidae), Pitnus antillanus (Ptinidae), Stereodermus exilis and Stereodermus carinatus (Brentidae). Special reference is given to collecting techniques, host plants, taxonomical and nomenclatorial difficulties as well as distribution patterns. In some cases the host plant could be identified for the first time: Miconia mirabilis (Melastomataceae) for Euplectalecia eurythropus (Buprestidae), Capparis cynophallophora (Capparaceae) for Leptophysa guadeloupensis, Besleria lutea (Gesneriaceae) for Heikertingerella guadeloupensis and Charianthus alpinus (Melastomataceae) for Gioia antillarum (all Chrysomelidae: Alticinae). Biogeographical aspects are briefly discussed, and a list of 112 references is provided.
