dct:abstract
A number of previously unrecorded butterfly species have been collected on the island of New Caledonia since the fauna was surveyed by HOLLOWAY and PETERS in 1976. The lycaenid genera Prosotas DRUCE, Evers HUBNER and Theclinesthes ROBER, are recorded from New Caledonia for the first time, and Theclinesthes petersi sp. n., is described from New Caledonia material in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, and the Bernice P. Bishop Museum Honolulu. The presence of two species not recorded by HOLLOWAY & PETERS (1976): Eurema brigitta STOLL, 1780, and Hypolimnas misippus LINNAEUS, 1764, is confirmed on the island, and the occurrence on New Caledonia of Catopyrops florinda BUTLER, 1877, and Danaus affinis FABRICIUS, 1775, previously recorded only from the Loyalties, is reported.
